1795 Halfpenny Lottery Token Featuring a CH Boy

Active

CH boys drew the tickets for the State Lottery until it ceased in 1826, the year of the first Founder's Day Dinner. After George III stopped issuing copper coins in 1787, a shortage of small change led to thousands of privately issued halfpenny and penny tokens, readily accepted as unofficial coins. This token, issued in 1795 by the Lottery Office Richardson, Goodluck & Co, shows a CH boy holding aloft a lottery ticket he has just drawn from the lottery drum behind him. Includes a copy of the CH Heritage Series booklet 'Badges, Prizes and Tokens'. Proceeds shared equally between Christ's Hospital and the CH Museum.y b

Founder's Day Dinner

Old Blues of Christ's Hospital have gathered to dine on record since 1826 — and very likely before that — celebrating the birthday of King Edward VI and uniting generations of former pupils.
